Faculties Jorge Vieira and Vasco Guerra win ULisboa/CGD scientific award 2022

The 2022 Scientific Award of the University of Lisbon/Caixa Geral de Depósitos, in the scientific area of Physics and Materials, was awarded to Jorge Vieira. A honorable mention was also awarded to Vasco Guerra.

The award, established by the University of Lisbon in collaboration with Caixa Geral de Depósitos, aims to reward scientific research activity and encourages the practice of publishing in international journals of recognized quality.

Faculty Marta Fajardo wins Tremplin Mariano Gago award

Marta Fajardo and IRAMIS-CEA researcher Hamed Merdji are one of the winning pairs of the Tremplin Mariano Gago award. The award was granted by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation of France (MESRI) and the French Academy of Sciences, considering the year of the Portugal-France Season 2022 and with the support of the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, the French Ministry of Culture, the Camões Institute – Institute of Cooperation and Language and the Office of Cultural Strategy, Planning and Evaluation (GEPAC).

The winning project NanoXIMAGES leverages on the European Innovation Council NanoXCAN, and has practical application in the area of nanotechnologies, aiming to prove that it is possible to reconstruct an X-ray image of an object through a process with incoherent light. This technique has strong applicability in the areas of medicine and biology.

The projects were selected by an international jury coordinated by MESRI, the French Academy of Sciences and the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, composed of French and Portuguese scientists, to strengthen bilateral research cooperation between two French-Portuguese teams and promoting their continuation and expansion. The official award ceremony took place on June 21, 2022, at the Grand Hall of the French Academy of Sciences.

Marija Vranic wins 2022 IUPAP Early Career Scientist Prize

Marija Vranic (invited professor with the domain of Plasma Physics, Lasers and Nuclear Fusion of the Department of Physics) was granted the 2022 IUPAP Early Career Scientist Prize in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the area of plasma physics (commission C16).

Early Career Scientist Prizes recognize the contributions of early career physicists in different subfields, with up to 8 years of research experience following Ph.D. The award consists of a certificate, a medal and a monetary award.

Marija Vranic is the first scientist affiliated to a Portuguese institution to receive this distinction from IUPAP, in the different areas of physics eligible for the award.

Faculty A Malaquias appointed member of the F4E TAP in 2022-2023

Artur Malaquias has been appointed member of the Technical Advisory Panel (TAP) of Fusion for Energy (F4E) for the term 2022-2023.

The TAP assists the Governing Board and Director in engineering, scientific and technological matters related to ITER, the Broader Approach and preparations for demonstration fusion reactors (DEMO).
The TAP is composed of 13 members appointed by the Governing Board from among persons of recognized standing and professional experience in engineering, scientific and technical matters relevant to ITER, the Broader Approach and DEMO. Each member is appointed for a term of two years renewable.
